Soccer et athlétisme
Victor Gouttin, originaire de Lethbridge, se démarque dans deux sports avec les Dinos de l’Université de Calgary : soccer et athlétisme. En plus, il est étudiant dans le programme d’ingénierie de la faculté Schulich School of Engineering.
Dans sa première saison avec l’équipe de soccer universitaire, en 2022, la jeune recrue a rapidement eu un impact positif. Le défenseur central a débuté dans chacun des 16 matchs et a joué un total de 1493 minutes, le plus de temps accumulé de tous les joueurs sur le champ. L’équipe a fini la saison avec une médaille d’argent aux championnats de la conférence de l’ouest canadien de soccer U Sports.
Cette même année, Victor a été choisi pour faire partie de l’équipe de soccer Team Alberta qui s’est rendue aux Jeux d’été du Canada à Niagara en Ontario. L’équipe albertaine a remporté la médaille de bronze. Victor reçoit aussi une autre distinction en 2022 : il est nommé athlète de l’année à l’école Crescent Heights High School.
Il avait aussi participé aux Jeux d’été de l’Alberta en 2016, et en 2019, il était membre des équipes qui ont remporté la médaille de bronze au championnat provincial de soccer extérieur, et la médaille d’or au championnat provincial de soccer intérieur.
Si Victor est en quelque sorte un habitué des grandes compétitions, il mentionne que c’est en partie grâce à une décision prise avant d’entrer au secondaire. « Nous avons pris la décision en famille que je déménage de Lethbridge à Calgary. J’ai donc vécu avec mon oncle et ma tante pendant les années du secondaire. Ceci m’a permis de pouvoir jouer avec l’équipe provinciale. »
Lorsqu’il n’est pas sur le terrain de soccer, la vitesse et l’athlétisme de Victor sont mis en évidence par des résultats de courses le désignant parmi les plus rapides dans sa catégorie d’âge. En 2022, il a remporté la médaille d’or dans les courses de 800 m et de 1 500 m au championnat des écoles secondaires de la province. Par la suite, au championnat provincial, il a fini troisième dans la course de 800 m dans la catégorie d’âge U20.
Dans sa première année avec l’équipe d’athlétisme des Dinos, le coureur de vitesse a fini en 14e position au Canada pour le 600 m. Il s’est aussi qualifié pour l’équipe de relais des 4×400 m au championnat national U Sports, avec un résultat de 4e place pour cette équipe. Dans un sport ou les millisecondes font toute la différence, Victor s’est qualifié pour participer à la course du 800 m au championnat national à Langley en Colombie-Britannique, et il a manqué de se rendre à la finale … par 0,01 seconde.
Défenseur sur le terrain de soccer, coureur de vitesse avec l’équipe d’athlétisme, étudiant en ingénierie; cela fait pour un horaire chargé et tout un nouveau défi à relever pour le franco-albertain. « Le défi récent est surtout de poursuivre mes études en ingénierie en même temps que de participer et performer dans deux sports universitaires! »

Soccer, Track & Field
Victor Gouttin, originally from Lethbridge, competes in two sports with the University of Calgary Dinos—soccer and track and field. He is also enrolled in the engineering program at the Schulich School of Engineering.
In his first season with the university soccer team, in 2022, it didn’t take long for the rookie to make a positive impact. The defender started in all of the team’s 16 games and played a total of 1,493 minutes, the most of any player on the field. The Dinos ended the season with a silver medal at the Canada West Conference Championship.
That same year, Victor was selected to play for Team Alberta and they went on to compete in the Canada Summer Games in Niagara, Ontario. The Albertans came away with a bronze medal. Another accolade for Victor in 2022: he was named Athlete of the Year at Calgary’s Crescent Heights High School.
The soccer player competed in the Alberta Summer Games in 2016 and, in 2019, he was part of two teams that went on to medal at provincial championships, winning bronze in outdoor soccer and gold in the winter season’s indoor soccer.
Victor has had the opportunity to compete at several major events thanks, in part, to his relocating to Calgary. “We made the decision, as a family, that I would move to Calgary from Lethbridge. I went to live with my uncle and aunt for my high school years and this allowed me to play with the provincial team.”
When he’s not on the pitch, Victor’s speed and athleticism are on display on the running track, with race results placing him as one of the fastest in his age category. In 2022, he won gold in the 800m and 1,500m races at the provincial high school track and field competition. He followed that up with a third place finish in the U20 800m event at the provincial championship.
In his first year with the Dinos track and field team, he came in 14th in Canada in the 600m race. He qualified to run with the 4x400m relay team that competed at the national USports championship and helped them race to a fourth place finish. In a sport where milliseconds can make a world of difference, Victor qualified to run in the 800m race at nationals in Langley, British Columbia, but he missed qualifying for the final race… by 0,01 seconds.
Defender on the soccer pitch, sprinter on the track, and engineering student; it adds up to a very busy schedule and this high-performing Franco-Albertan is giving it his all. “The challenge for me this year is to focus on my engineering studies at the same time as I’m training and competing in two university sports.”
